"Pileated Woodpecker" Holes in Cedar TreeWalking thru the woods on a recent morning I noticed shavings around the base of a quite large cedar tree (the tree is about 3 & a half feet across towards the base). "What the heck" I thought.. As I looked up the tree I noticed several holes in various stages of creation. The holes were too high for a person to make - so I knew it was a critter of some sort. A woodpecker was my first thought - but the shavings were so large I didn't think there could be such a big woodpecker.. An inquiry to my Uncles settled it: my Uncle Mel confirmed it was the work of a "Pileated Woodpecker." Apparently the bird isn't nest building, but drilling into the "heartwood" for insects and grubs.. What a powerful bird..! Comments
